Book Review: Don't Worry, It Gets Worse by Alida Nugent

Don't Worry, It Gets Worse was another Early Review (ER) title I was really excited to snag via the site's monthly lottery.  The other was last month's book by Drew Magary called:  Someone Could Get Hurt.

I love Drew Magary's writing at Deadspin but before this turns into a blog where I gush about Drew (I can call him Drew because in my brain Drew and I are acquainted. We aren't good friends or anything because that would be creepy. I don't think Drew digs creepy and look I just want Drew to like me, okay?) let's get back to the subject of this review.

I wasn't familiar with Alida Nugent's blog called The Frenemy but after reading the summary for the ER batch I knew that as a twenty-something weird girl struggling to be an adult (like the author) this book of memoir type essays was my cup of tea or whiskey if you prefer. Nugent would likely suggest you have the whiskey.

The first half of the book was definitely funnier than the last half probably because I related to the opening essays. However, I found it difficult to finish the book when I stopped relating to Nugent because she started to veer into the trials of being a single girl and the she began to gush about living in NYC. That's why I gave it three shining LibraryThing stars: it's good but it didn't make me spin around the room 'til I passed out.

I love the author's voice, her style, and plan to start keeping up with her on her blog. It's a fun, quick read and I recommend it to any and all "weird" girls who were raised on MTV, love the Internet, and can't stop buying clothes and yet still end up wearing the same t-shirt and jeans (picked off the floor) they wore yesterday.

Nugent's book comes out next month. Are you odd but in a good way- like not hoarding newspapers way? You should pre-order it then via Amazon or a brick and mortar store near fresh coffee.
